Western Digital to sell assets to Hitachi unit
PETALING JAYA: Western Digital Corp has agreed to sell the assets of its media substrate manufacturing facility in Sarawak to a subsidiary of Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, the hard drive manufacturing unit of Hitachi Ltd.
The employees of the facility would become employees of the purchaser, it said in a statement yesterday.
The transaction is expected to be closed in the current quarter, subject to customary closing conditions. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Western Digital announced in December it was taking action to realign its cost structure to match a softer demand environment.
The Sarawak facility, where Western Digital manufactured aluminium substrate for hard drive magnetic media, was acquired by Western Digital as part of its acquisition of Komag Inc in September 2007.
Western Digital is consolidating its substrate operation from this facility into its other substrate facility in Johor.
