Celcom hits subscriber target
By ROSLINA MOHAMAD
KUANTAN: Celcom (M) Bhd has hit its target of two million subscribers in the eastern region this year and expects the number to reach 2.3 million by year-end.
Eastern region vice-president Datuk Sulaiman Ahmad said the ratio of the prepaid and postpaid segments was 80:20.
“Kelantan topped the list of having the most subscribers with 40%, followed by Pahang with 38% and Terengganu the rest.
“The company’s aggressive marketing strategies, attractive packages and the implementation of the mobile number portability have helped us meet the mark,’’ he told reporters during a Hari Raya open house yesterday.
Sulaiman said another business segment that was gaining popularity was the mobile broadband users that made up 30% of the postpaid subscribers.
On the prepaid segment forming the bulk, he said this was because the subscribers did not have to deal with bills. “Most of them are students and youths and they prefer prepaid. It is hassle-free.”
On the upgrading of its infrastructure, Sulaiman said this was done from time to time to meet the increase in demand.
There were 92 new locations where coverage had been extended in the eastern region this year, he added.
“This means Celcom has extended its coverage up to 95% of the populated area in the eastern region. We hope to focus on providing the coverage to the remaining area by next year,’’ he said.
