Red Hat expanding in M'sia and Asean (update)
KUALA LUMPUR: Open source software solutions provider Red Hat Inc is strenghtening its presence in Asean region, especially Malaysia, through partnerships.
Its general manager for Asean Damien Wong said Red Hat would invest in partner-specific marketing, sales and technical support to promote sustainability of the channel partner ecosytem.
He said there was vast opportunities in Malaysia, especially from the information and communication technology (ICT) initiatives such as the Digital Malaysia programme launched in 2012.
“The programme will help innovate digital business models, and create new sources of growth,” he said at Red Hat's media briefing on its business update here yesterday.
International Data Corp (IDC) estimates the Malaysia's information technology (IT) industry to be worth RM29.74bil (US$10bil) in 2013.
Red Hat Inc, an American-based software company that provides open-source software products, has grown over the past four years with channel bookings at 53% of total bookings in 2008 to 60% in 2012 and to date, it has recorded about 62%.
Red Hat's major customers are mainly from the telecommunication industries, public sector and financial institutions. The others are from healthcare, transportation and logistics as well as oil and gas sectors.
“To date, almost 12% of Red Hat's bookings is from the Asia-Pacific region,” he said.
Red Hat plans to hire between 600 and 800 associates worldwide by 2014, with some involved in sales and customers support in Asean.
YTL Communications Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of YTL Power International Bhd, is one of the biggest clients for Red Hat in Malaysia. Last year, the Malacca government deployed Red Hat Enterprise Virtualisation to develop the foundation for its planned cloud computing infrastructure.
