Malaysia's inflation up 1.6% in March on higher food prices
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's inflation rate rose 1.6% in March from a year ago due to higher cost of food and non-alcoholic beverages.
The Statistics Department said on Wednesday the CPI for March rose to 106.2 from 104.5 a year ago. The increase was in line with consensus.
"The index for food & non-alcoholic beverages and non-food for March 2013 showed increases of 3.3% and 1.0% respectively as compared to the same month in 2012," it said.
"When compared with the previous month, the CPI increased by 0.1%," it said, pointing out when compared with the previous month, the index for non-food increased by 0.2% and the index for food & non-alcoholic beverages was unchanged at 110.2
For January-March, the CPI increased by 1.5% to 106.1 from 104.5 in the previous corresponding period.
"The index for food & non-alcoholic beverages and non-food increased by 2.9% and 1.0% respectively," it said.
