Malaysia's December manufacturing sales up 6% to RM51.9b

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's manufacturing sector recorded a 6% growth in sales in December 2012 to RM51.90bil from RM48.90bil a year ago, boosted by the manufacture of semiconductor devices and vehicles.

The Statistics Department said on Friday that month-on-month, the sales value increased by 1.9% or RM900mil from November.

"The sales value in November 2012 has been revised to a positive 7.1% on-year to record RM50.9bil," it said.

The department said on a seasonally adjusted month-on-month, the sales value in December 2012 decreased by 1.7% as compared with November. On the December 2012 sales value, it said the manufacture of semiconductor devices recorded a 58.9% increase or RM2.057bil to RM5.550bil in sales value from RM3.493bil a year ago.

Vehicles recorded a 55.3% increase in the sales value to RM1.778bil from RM1.145bil while the manufacture of other basic industrial chemicals except fertilisers and nitrogen compounds recorded a 11.1% increase in sale value to RM2.601bil.

The department said the employees engaged in the manufacturing sector in December 2012 increased at a slower pace of 1.6% or 16,339 persons compared to a year ago.

However, on a monthly basis, there was a 0.1% decline from November. Salaries and wages paid in December 2012 increased by 6.9% on-year to RM2.760bil from November. The total amount increased by 6.1% on-year. On monthly basis of average salaries and wages per employee in December increased by 7% to RM2,075.
