PETALING JAYA: MyEG Services Bhd has been chosen as the sole manager of the Bantuan Lesen 1Malaysia (BL1M) programme, a government initiative to encourage motorcyclists to be licensed.

Under the BL1M programme that was launched on Jan 31, motorcyclists will only have to pay RM199 for their licence.

The fee includes the licence application fee and photograph, driving lessons, and the theory and practical tests at Road Transport Department (RTD)-approved driving institutes.

In addition, participants who failed the theoretical test the first time around will be allowed to retake the test for another two times for free.

The BL1M programme is exclusive to first time applicants of the B2 category motorcycle licence for bikes under 250cc.

It is available to Malaysian applicants between ages of 17 and 40, who do not already hold any driving licence of any class.

Currently, the average cost to apply for a B2 category motorcycle licence is RM380, which is inclusive of the theory and practical tests.

Executive chairman Datuk Norraesah Mohamad said MyEG had received an encouraging number of online registrations for the programme.

“We are optimistic that this programme will result in greater road safety for all,” she said in the company's filing with Bursa Malaysia.

MyEG will leverage on its nationwide support centres to reach the intended target audiences.

“We believe BL1M will be invaluable in raising the awareness of road safety etiquette and enhancing the well-being of all road users,” Norraesah said.

Application forms are available for two weeks from Thursday at 222 branch offices of Barisan Nasional Youth component parties nationwide.

According to a statement, MyEG said the RM199 fee would only be accepted through money order and was only payable upon submission of the completed form at the authorised centres.

Driving institutes will need to obtain the necessary approvals from RTD to be authorised under the BL1M programme.

Some 500,000 new motorcyclists could possibly enjoy the lower fees offered under the BL1M programme.
