Japan firms talk on system chip tie

TOKYO: Renesas Electronics and two other big Japanese chip makers are in talks to combine their struggling system chip operations in a government-backed deal, according to sources, as pressure mounts for drastic reforms to confront stiff competition.

Fujitsu Ltd, Panasonic Corp and Innovation Network Corp, an investment fund, would also be part of the deal, which could outsource production to privately held chip maker Global-Foundries, they said. Reuters
