Starbucks opens its 100th outlet
By SHANNEN WONG
PETALING JAYA: Berjaya Starbucks Coffee Company Sdn Bhd is planning to open another five to six outlets in Malaysia within the first half of this year, said executive director and Starbucks franchisee Datuk Francis Lee.
Speaking after the opening of the company's 100th outlet in Jaya One, Lee said the company would be looking at major cities within and outside the Klang Valley.
On average, Berjaya Starbucks Coffee invests approximately RM700mil to RM800mil in each of its outlets, depending on the size and location, he said.
Lee was optimistic on the growth of Starbucks Coffee in the country as it managed to open its 50th outlet in its sixth year in Malaysia and consequently its 100th outlet in another three and half years.
On long-term plans, he said the company hopes to have 200 outlets within the next five years.
Last year, the company opened 18 outlets. Its top four outlets are at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Times Square, Sunway Pyramid and Mid Valley Megamall.
For the past nine years, Berjaya Starbucks had invested a total of RM20mil to grow its brand in Malaysia.
"We are very happy with our investment here in Malaysia," said Lee, noting that the company currently holds 45% to 50% share of local gourmet coffee market.
Berjaya Starbucks Coffee recorded revenue growth of 25% to 30% on a year-to year basis, he added.
Additionally, Berjaya Starbucks Coffee plans to open a "drive-through-outlet" by year-end, he said.
